Is Bellingham a
good place to live?

An honest look — the real pros, the real cons, and who it actually fits.

The honest answer is yes – for the right person. Bellingham gives you world-class outdoor access, a real college-town culture, and a genuinely low violent-crime rate, wrapped in a mild marine climate that is drier than Seattle. You pay for all of it two ways: housing that outpaces local wages, and winters that are long and gray. Here is the balanced version, with sources – the same one I give buyers before they fall for the summer photos.

The honest ledger

Pros and cons, straight

What makes it special

  • World-class outdoor access – Mount Baker, 70+ miles of Galbraith trails, the bay, and the San Juan Islands
  • A real college town – WWU brings 14,700 students, the arts, and a young, educated crowd
  • Low violent crime – at or below the national median, and falling
  • No state income tax and a low (~0.7%) property-tax rate
  • An hour to Vancouver, BC, plus Amtrak and the Alaska ferry from Fairhaven
  • Mild marine climate – drier than Seattle, milder than the East Coast

The real catches

  • Expensive housing – ranked the least affordable small city in the U.S. (2025)
  • A “missing middle” job market – limited high-wage private-sector work
  • Long, gray winters – roughly 200 cloudy days a year
  • Two hours from a major airport (SeaTac)
  • Property crime above the national average (a Washington-wide pattern)
The pitch

The outdoors is the whole argument

This is what people fall for. Mount Baker Ski Area holds the world record for snowfall in a single season (1,140 inches). Galbraith Mountain sits right above town with 70-plus miles of mountain-bike singletrack. The bay is in your backyard, the San Juan Islands are a ferry away, and the county park system runs from saltwater beaches to alpine. Bellingham is a designated “Trail Town USA,” and it earns it.

Community

A college town with a real downtown

Western Washington University anchors the culture – 14,700 students, a top-25 regional university, and the single largest employer in the county. That energy shows up in the music, the food, the bookstores, and a population where 55% hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. Downtown and historic Fairhaven are genuinely walkable, and there is always something on.

Violent crime in Bellingham runs at or below the national median, and total crime fell about 8% in 2024. Property crime is higher than average – but that is true across Washington, not unique to here.Source: FBI UCR 2024 via NeighborhoodScout
The honest catch

What you trade for it

  • Housing outpaces incomes. A 2025 study ranked Bellingham the least affordable small city in the country; a household needed roughly $180,591 (167% of area median income) to afford the 2025 median home, against an actual median near $108,000. The full breakdown is in my cost-of-living guide.
  • A “missing middle” job market. Government, healthcare, and the university carry the economy; high-wage private-sector roles are thin, so many newcomers bring their income with them as remote workers.
  • Gray winters. Roughly 200 cloudy days a year. The rain is more drizzle than downpour – the real adjustment is the lack of sun from October to April. (The honest weather picture is its own guide.)

None of this is a dealbreaker for the right buyer – but you should walk in with eyes open. Pressure-test a price with the affordability calculator before you fall in love.

Getting around

Connected, for a small city

Walk & bike

Walk Score 49, Bike Score 58, a flat waterfront core, and a true trail network – car-light is doable here.

Air & rail

Bellingham International (Alaska to Seattle/Portland, Allegiant to Vegas/Mesa), plus Amtrak Cascades and the Alaska ferry from Fairhaven. SeaTac is ~2 hours for big trips.

Close to Canada

About an hour to Vancouver, BC; the border is 20 minutes north. The cross-border life is real here.

Quick answers

Is Bellingham a good place to live?

For the right person, yes. If you value outdoor access, a walkable college town, and a low violent-crime rate over a deep high-wage job market and reliable winter sun, Bellingham is hard to beat. The main trade-offs are the cost of housing and the long gray winters.

Is Bellingham, WA safe?

Violent crime in Bellingham sits at or slightly below the national median and fell in 2024. Property crime runs above the national average, which is a pattern across all of Washington. Overall, residents consistently rate it a safe small city.

What is the job market like in Bellingham?

It is anchored by Western Washington University, PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center, city and county government, and the BP Cherry Point refinery. High-wage private-sector jobs are limited – a ‘missing middle’ – so many newcomers arrive with remote income. Unemployment is about 4.8% (2026).

Why do people move to Bellingham?

The most common reasons I hear: outdoor access (Mount Baker, the bay, 70-plus miles of trails), the college-town culture, being an hour from Vancouver BC, no state income tax, and a slower pace than Seattle.

What are the downsides of living in Bellingham?

Housing is expensive relative to local wages – one 2025 ranking called it the least affordable small city in the U.S. Winters are long and gray, the nearest major airport (SeaTac) is about two hours away, and the high-wage job market is thin.
