Fairhaven: Bellingham’s Historic Seaside District

A historic brick building at golden hour in the Fairhaven district of Bellingham

Fairhaven

Brick streets, a working marina, and the best café culture in town.

Fairhaven is the part of Bellingham that makes people stop on the sidewalk and ask their broker, “wait, what is it like to live here?” Brick streets, a working marina, bookstore-and-coffee culture, all of it walkable and all of it on the water. It is one of the most sought-after pockets in the county, and once you spend an afternoon here it is easy to see why.

A boomtown that kept its bones

Fairhaven went up fast in the 1890s, when speculators were sure the transcontinental railroad would make it the next great port city. The railroad went elsewhere, the boom cooled, and the district was more or less frozen in handsome red brick. That accident of history is exactly what makes it special now — the Victorian storefronts are real, not a theme.

What to actually do here

Start at Village Books, the beloved independent bookstore that anchors the village green. Get coffee. Wander down to the marina and Marine Park, where you can launch a kayak or just watch the trains roll through. In summer there is an outdoor cinema and a Wednesday farmers market. And when you are ready to head downtown, you do not need a car: the South Bay Trail runs about three flat, car-free miles along the bay straight into the heart of Bellingham.

The real-estate angle

Because it is walkable, historic, and on the water, Fairhaven holds its value and moves fast when good homes come up. Condos near the village, craftsman homes on the hill, the occasional view property — it is a small market with a lot of demand. If Fairhaven is on your list, it pays to be ready before the listing hits.

Thinking about life here?
