The basics

ParkingNo dedicated lot; use nearby downtown/waterfront street parking and walk in via the South Bay Trail.

Glass Beach is one of those spots locals know and visitors stumble onto. It’s a small pocket beach tucked along Bellingham’s downtown waterfront, just off the South Bay Trail between downtown and Fairhaven, known for the sea glass that collects among the rocks — smoothed bits of blue, green, and brown left over from the waterfront’s industrial past. I’ll be honest: it’s more a beachcombing-and-views beach than a sunbathing one. It’s rocky, the water is cold Salish Sea saltwater, and it’s informal rather than a manicured park. But on a low tide with the light right, it’s a genuinely lovely, quiet piece of the bay.

What you’ll find

A rocky shoreline along Bellingham Bay with sea glass mixed into the gravel, reached on foot from the South Bay Trail. The trail itself is a wide, mostly level walking-and-biking path with bay and island views and plenty of places to sit. Amenities right at the beach are limited — this isn’t a developed park — so plan accordingly. Please take photos and leave the glass for the next person; the supply only lasts if people don’t haul it off by the bucket.

Good for

Beachcombers, photographers, and anyone who wants a quiet waterfront walk with a treasure-hunt twist. It’s a good low-key stop on a South Bay Trail outing between downtown and Fairhaven. Wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet and watch your footing on the rocks.

When to go

Lower tides expose more beach and more glass, so check the tide tables before you head down. Mornings and weekdays are quietest; sunny weekend afternoons draw a crowd to the trail.

Getting there

Access is on foot from the South Bay Trail along Bellingham’s downtown waterfront near the marina, roughly off Pine Street. There’s free parking nearby that fills up on nice weekends. It’s an easy walk or bike from downtown or Fairhaven.

A local broker’s take

I point a lot of downtown and Fairhaven buyers at the South Bay Trail, and Glass Beach is the kind of small, characterful spot that makes that whole stretch of waterfront feel special. It won’t be the reason someone buys a condo on the hill, but it’s exactly the sort of place people end up walking to on a Sunday and quietly falling for the neighborhood over.

Good to know

Where is Glass Beach in Bellingham?

It’s a pocket beach on Bellingham Bay reached on foot from the South Bay Trail along the downtown waterfront near the marina, roughly off Pine Street.

Can I take the sea glass?

Please don’t fill a bucket. Taking a small piece is common, but the beach only stays special if visitors leave most of it for others — photos are the better souvenir.

Is it a good swimming beach?

Not really. It’s rocky and the water is cold Salish Sea saltwater with no lifeguard, so it’s best for beachcombing and views rather than swimming.
