Bender Fields
Bender Fields is where Lynden goes to play organized sports — 56 acres of ball fields and courts, plus enough side features that the non-athletes in the family have something to do too.
The basics
Size
56 acres
Bender Fields, officially the Bender Family Recreation complex, is Lynden’s big athletic park on the east side of town. At 56 acres it packs in soccer, lacrosse, softball and youth baseball fields, a cricket pitch, four basketball courts and four dedicated pickleball courts. Around the competitive core there’s a bocce court, sand volleyball, a pump track, climbing rocks, a playground and a fenced off-leash dog area. There’s a picnic shelter with an indoor kitchen for events, restrooms and parking, plus access to the Jim Kaemingk Sr. Trail. It’s a true regional sports hub, the place tournaments and league nights fill up.
What you’ll find
The field complex is the backbone — soccer, lacrosse, softball and youth baseball fields plus a cricket pitch, the kind of inventory that hosts tournaments and league play. On the court side there are four pickleball courts and four basketball courts, so it’s a reliable place to find an open game. The extras are what make it work for a whole family: a bocce court, sand volleyball, a pump track for bikes and scooters, climbing rocks and a playground. A fenced off-leash dog area gives owners a safe spot to let dogs run. There’s a picnic shelter with an indoor kitchen that can be rented for gatherings, restrooms on site, and the Jim Kaemingk Sr. Trail runs nearby for walking or biking.
Good for
If you play league sports, run a youth team or want dedicated pickleball without waiting on shared tennis lines, this is the Lynden park for you. It’s also a smart pick when one person wants exercise and the rest of the group doesn’t — somebody can hit pickleball while kids ride the pump track, a dog runs in the fenced area, and someone else walks the trail. Tournament weekends get busy and parking fills, so if you want a quiet hour, come on an off-peak weekday.
Getting there
Bender Fields is on the east side of Lynden, an easy drive from downtown and roughly 20 minutes north of Bellingham. There’s a sizable parking lot, restrooms and an accessible layout across the complex. Because it’s a large site with fields, courts and the dog park spread out, it helps to know which corner you’re headed for before you arrive. The Jim Kaemingk Sr. Trail connects through, so you can also reach it on foot or by bike from elsewhere in town.
A local broker’s take
When families consider Lynden, the quality of its rec facilities is a real selling point, and Bender Fields is the headliner — four dedicated pickleball courts and a fenced dog park are amenities a lot of bigger towns don’t have. I’m honest that Lynden is a commuter trade-off if you work in Bellingham, but for households built around youth sports and weekend league play, having a complex this complete a few minutes from home is a genuine quality-of-life win. If sports access is high on your list, tell me and I’ll point you toward the neighborhoods closest to this side of town.
